Is it time to change your racket? 7 signs that yours has seen better days

¿Es el momento de cambiar de pala? 7 señales de que la tuya ya no da más

There is one question we get asked a lot at Be Bold Padel:

”When should I change my padel racket?”

And the answer is almost never “when it breaks”.

In fact, most amateur players keep playing for months with a racket that no longer offers the same feel as the first day. We gradually get used to its changes and end up thinking it’s us who are playing worse.

But often, the problem isn't you.

It’s the racket...

These are the seven signs that indicate it might be time to replace it.

1. You notice more vibrations than usual

If after several matches you start to feel discomfort in your elbow, wrist, or shoulder, it doesn't always mean your technique is off.

With use, the racket's materials lose some of their ability to absorb vibrations.

If you used to finish a match without discomfort and now you end up with a tired arm, it is worth checking the condition of your racket.

Be Bold Tip: before you think about changing your technique, check the equipment you are playing with first.

2. The ball doesn't come off like it used to

Do you have the feeling that you need to hit harder to achieve the same depth?

This is one of the most common signs.

Over time, the interior foam loses some of its properties and the racket stops responding the same way.

It doesn't happen overnight.

It happens little by little.

And precisely because of that, it’s hard to notice.

3. Small cracks are starting to appear

Not all cracks mean the racket is broken, but they are a warning sign.

Check especially:

  • the frame;
  • the bridge connection;
  • the sides;
  • the face of the racket.

If you see a crack that grows as you play more matches, it’s better not to wait until it breaks completely.

4. The protector looks like it’s been through a war

If you use a frame protector, take a look at it. Often, the protector tells the story of all the knocks the racket has taken.

And even if the protector has done its job, the carbon underneath may also have suffered.

A very worn-out protector is usually a good time to check the general state of the racket.

5. Your racket no longer fits your level

This is probably the most important reason, and also the most overlooked.

Many players buy a racket when they start.

A year later they play much better, or vice versa.

They buy a racket that is too demanding and never feel comfortable with it.

You don't always need to change because the racket is old; sometimes it simply is no longer the right racket for your current game.

6. You have less and less confidence in your shots

There is something that no technical data can measure:

  • confidence;
  • if you hesitate before a volley;
  • if you no longer dare to accelerate;
  • if you have the feeling that the ball reacts differently on every hit.

The problem might not be you.

When you stop trusting your racket, you usually stop enjoying yourself, and that is reason enough to consider a change.

7. Many matches have passed… and you’ve never had it checked

In amateur padel, there is no magic number; some players change rackets every season, and others play with the same one for three or four years.

Everything depends on:

  • frequency of use;
  • intensity of play;
  • type of shots;
  • the care it receives.

But if you play two or three times a week and haven't checked your racket in a long time, it might be a good moment to ask yourself if it's still offering you what you need.

So… should I change my racket?

Not necessarily.

Before buying a new racket, ask yourself these questions:

✅ Does it still fit my level?

✅ Does it give me confidence?

✅ Is it in good condition?

✅ Do I still enjoy playing with it?

If you answer “no” to several of them…

Perhaps the time has come to start looking for a new court companion.

And which one should I choose?

This is where many players make the same mistake again: They buy the racket their favorite player uses, or the one on sale, or the one with the nicest design.

At Be Bold Padel, we believe there is a much better way.

That is why we have developed our AI Padel Racket Advisor, a free tool that analyzes your level, playing style, physique, and frequency of play to recommend the three rackets that best suit you.
