I’m going to tell you a simple truth: a cheap, well-applied overgrip can improve your game more than changing your racket.
Why? Because the overgrip is the only thing touching your hand. If it’s slippery, too thick, or sweaty… you end up gripping too hard, tiring yourself out faster, and losing control.
Let’s get practical...
1) What is an overgrip and what is it for?
It is a tape that you put over the racket’s original grip to:
-
improve grip (so the racket doesn't move in your hand),
-
absorb sweat,
-
adjust the thickness of the handle,
-
and feel more control in every shot.
In short: more security, less hand tension, and better feel.
2) How to tell if you need to change it (clear signs)
Change it if you notice any of these:
-
it slips even when you dry your hand,
-
it’s “shiny” or hard,
-
it smells funny (yes, it happens 😅),
-
it’s peeling off,
-
or you no longer feel a firm grip on volleys and bandejas.
Quick rule: if you play 2–3 times a week, it’s normal to change it every 4–8 matches, depending on how much you sweat and the type of overgrip.
3) Types of overgrips (in plain English): which one is right for you?
There is no “best for everyone” here, only “best for you.”
A) Tacky overgrip
Ideal if: you want the racket to stay “fixed” in your hand.
-
Gives a sense of control and security.
-
A very good option for most amateurs.
👉 Recommended for: players looking for control, secure volleys, and a firm grip.
B) Dry / absorbent overgrip
Ideal if: you sweat a lot or play in hot conditions.
-
Absorbs better and prevents your hand from sliding.
-
Usually has a “drier” feel than tacky grips.
👉 Recommended for: long matches, summer, people who sweat heavily.
C) Thinner vs. thicker overgrip
This affects your comfort significantly.
-
Thinner: more sensitivity and “feel” (you feel the racket more).
-
Thicker / cushioned: more comfort and less vibration, but less feel.
Club tip:
If your hand hurts or you notice your forearm feeling strained, a little extra thickness (without overdoing it) often helps.
