Control vs. power: the choice that changes your game (and your arm)

Control vs potencia: la elección que cambia tu juego (y tu brazo)

If you are choosing between a control racket and a power racket, you are not alone. It is the most common decision… and also the one that causes the most mistakes.

Because it’s not just about “hitting harder.” It’s about playing better, making fewer mistakes, and taking care of your arm so you can keep enjoying padel.

Here is a clear guide, without the technical jargon.

The quick truth (no nonsense)

  • Control = more security, more balls kept in play, fewer errors.

  • Power = more speed and hitting force, but also more demanding and more mistakes if you aren't on point.

  • Balance = the sweet spot for 80% of amateurs.

1) When is a CONTROL racket right for you?

It’s right for you if…

  • You are at a beginner or intermediate level.

  • During a match, balls go out off the back wall or hit the fence.

  • You struggle to defend or return fast balls.

  • You are looking for consistency: keeping one more ball in play than your opponent.

What you notice on the court:

  • More “forgiveness” when you don’t hit perfectly.

  • More confidence in defense and volleys.

  • Less strain on the arm (especially if you also choose a good weight and feel).

👉 If your goal is to improve quickly, control is usually the smart choice.

2) When is a POWER racket right for you?

It’s right for you if…

  • You already have technique and feel solid with control.

  • You play with offensive intent: smashes, víboras, aggressive volleys.

  • You don’t get nervous at the net and you close out points.

Watch out for this (very important):

  • “Easy” power exists… but it often comes with less control.

  • If you move up to power too soon, you will notice:

    • more balls going out,

    • more frustration,

    • and sometimes discomfort due to excess demands.

3) The most recommended option: BALANCE

If you aren't completely sure, the answer is usually: balance.

It’s right for you if…

  • You are at an intermediate level and want one racket for “everything.”

  • One day you attack more and another day you defend more (which is normal).

  • You want to progress without the racket punishing you.

It’s the typical racket that allows you to:

  • defend comfortably,

  • volley with confidence,

  • and attack when the time is right.

4) What changes for your arm (and almost no one looks at)

This is where mistakes are made.

Beyond control/power, what influences the arm the most is:

✅ Weight

  • If you feel your arm is tired, try lowering the weight a bit.

  • A heavy racket can be fine… but if you play 2–3 times a week and you're tired, it takes its toll.

✅ Feel / foam

  • A more comfortable feel usually helps you play more “softly.”

  • A harder feel can be drier and more demanding.

✅ Overgrip and grip

A bad grip makes you squeeze too hard, and that is felt in the elbow/forearm.

Sometimes, just by using a properly applied overgrip, your sensations will improve.

Quick note: if you have persistent pain, it is best to check it with a health professional or sports physio. We guide you here on choosing equipment, but your body is in charge.

5) Quick test: what do you need TODAY?

Answer these 3 questions:

  1. In a match, do you lose more points due to errors or lack of power?

  2. Do you feel more comfortable in defense or attack?

  3. Have you had arm discomfort lately?

Quick result:

  • If you say “errors / defense / discomfort” → CONTROL

  • If you say “lack of power / attack / no discomfort” → POWER

  • If you are somewhere in between → BALANCE
